All patient contact is provided personally by Dr. Prins.  It may take 1-2 business days to receive a reply to inquires and new patient requests.

Sports Psychiatry Pittsburgh strives to offer new patient evaluations as promptly as possible. Wait times for new patient evaluation appointments will vary depending on the needs of existing patients and demand for services. 

Sports Psychiatry Pittsburgh is unable to offer emergency new patient evaluations. If you (or another person) are unable to keep yourself safe, or are in need of emergency medical care or crisis mental health services please call 911 or seek treatment the nearest hospital emergency department. Additional information for other crisis resources is available here.

 

What to Expect during the First Appointment

Initial intake appointments typically last between 60-90 minutes, and include evaluation and screening assessment of the following symptoms:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Life transition difficulties
  • Sleep disruption
  • Attention deficit and hyperactivity impairments
  • Disordered eating
  • Substance misuse
  • Trauma-related symptoms
  • Obsessive-compulsive symptoms
  • Aggression
  • Mania
  • Psychosis
  • Safety assessment

For athletes with post-concussive symptoms, evaluation also includes assessment and screening of the following symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Sleep disruption
  • Vision impairment
  • Vestibular symptoms

Discussion of treatment options may include:

  • Medications that may be helpful
  • Referral to therapy
  • Referral to other specialty care as indicated
  • Recommendation for a higher level of care as needed (possibly including hospitalization)
